Smith confirmed as new Brentford manager

Smith confirmed as new Brentford manager

Date published: Monday 30th November 2015 4:20

Championship side Brentford have confirmed the appointment of Dean Smith as their new head coach.

The 44-year-old joins the Bees from Walsall, along with assistant Richard O’Kelly, having been the fourth longest-serving manager in the top four divisions after nearly five years at the Banks’s Stadium.

Smith only signed a 12-month rolling contract at the Saddlers last month after they rejected an approach from Rotherham but Brentford, 11th in the Sky Bet Championship, have tempted him to Griffin Park.

Brentford head to Bolton on Monday with youth coach Lee Carsley in charge for the final time. The former Everton midfielder took over, initially until the end of the season, after the club sacked Marinus Dijkhuizen in September but insisted he did not want the job long term.

Brentford’s co-director of football, Rasmus Ankersen, said: “We believe Dean is exactly the authentic and strong leader we need to take Brentford forward and ultimately into the Premier League.

“We have been hugely impressed by Dean’s work at Walsall and especially how he has managed to turn a club with such a low budget into one pushing for promotion.”

Walsall chairman Jeff Bonser added: “We are disappointed to lose Dean. He is the fourth longest serving manager in English football and would have been at the helm for five years in January. We categorically did not want him to leave this football club and did all we could to keep him at the helm.

“He has been fantastic for Walsall Football Club and, in turn, we have been fantastic for him. We gave him his opportunity in management and believed in him throughout his tenure.

“We thank him, and Richard O’Kelly, for their hard work and efforts. However, we now have to look to the future.”

Smith replaced Chris Hutchings in January 2011 with the Saddlers bottom of Sky Bet League One and eight points adrift but he saved them from the drop on the final day. He guided them to their first-ever trip to Wembley, before losing 2-0 to Bristol City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last season, and Walsall are currently fourth in the third tier.

Former Bristol Rovers boss John Ward, who is Walsall’s professional development coach, will take caretaker charge ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Shrewsbury along with physio Jon Whitney and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler.

Brentford Manager Gushes With Praise For Ireland Defender John Egan - Pundit Arena

Brentford Manager Gushes With Praise For Ireland Defender John Egan

Brentford manager Dean Smith has been speaking very highly of Ireland international defender John Egan.

The 24-year-old has had a highly promising debut with the Bees in the Championship after joining from League One side Gillingham, and was rewarded for his fine form by being handed his first international cap by Martin O’Neill in a friendly against Iceland in March of this year.

Although the season ended on something of a disappointment for the Cork native as he saw his spot at the back taken by Yoann Barbet, Smith has nonetheless paid tribute to Egan when speaking to GetWestLondon , and he believes that the former Sunderland centre-half could be a future captain of the team:

“There’s a lot of promise there and he’ll be frustrated he’s not in the team. There’s a leader in John Egan.

“You can see it every day with his attitude around the place. He’s one that other players look up to and he’s got better and better. I’ve said before all the centre-half pairings can play in this league.”

Egan was named in the Ireland squad for the upcoming trio of matches, friendlies against Mexico and Uruguay and a World Cup qualifier against Austria, and while he probably starting in the latter, he has every chance of appearing either in the first friendly in New Jersey, or in the fixture at the Aviva three days later.

In any event, with competition for places at centre-back increased with the welcoming of Kevin Long into the international fold, Egan will have to keep improving if he wants to have a chance of usurping Ciaran Clark or Shane Duffy in the first-choice central partnership.

On the Mixer Irish Football Podcast this week, we’re joined by Galway United manager Shane Keegan, we react to Martin O’Neill’s latest Ireland squad, plus the usual discussion of League of Ireland matters.

Brentford manager Mark Warburton in line for Fulham hot seat as Shahid Khan deliberates over future of Kit Symons

By Joe Bernstein, Mail on Sunday 22:30 BST 11 Apr 2015, updated 01:15 BST 12 Apr 2015

    • Fulham are planning to swoop for Brentford boss Mark Warburton
    • Owner Shahid Khan is planning for next season
    • Warburton has led Brentford to seventh in the Championship

Fulham will sound out Brentford manager Mark Warburton about taking over at Craven Cottage with owner Shahid Khan planning to release a budget of £20million to spend on new players.

The Championship strugglers are deliberating over the future of Kit Symons who replaced Felix Magath in September but has won only one of his last eight games.

Khan, a billionaire who also owns NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars in America, has given his new chief football officer Mike Rigg the power to choose Fulham's next manager and he is looking at different options despite a good personal relationship with Symons.

Warburton's impressive record at west London rivals Brentford has made him a leading contender alongside Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy.

Warburton got Brentford promoted from League One and they have been surprise play-off contenders in The Championship this season doing the league double over Fulham along the way.

It has already been announced he will be leaving The Bees at the end of the season with QPR also interested in his services along with assistant David Weir. But Rangers, who have 14 players out of contract and face a huge fine if they are relegated, won't have the same spending power to offer Warburton as The Cottagers.

Symons wants to be given the chance of signing his own players and having a full season at Craven Cottage with them, but recent results are going against him. Fulham are conscious of FPP rules and with parachute payments from the Premier League due to run out, they feel the next transfer window may be the last opportunity to spend big to get them back into the top flight.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce could also be a shock contender with Khan prepared to invest to get Fulham back in the Premier League.

Allardyce's current deal at Upton Park runs out in the summer but he would like to stay in London.

Meanwhile, FA Cup semi-finalists Aston Villa have joined West Brom in the chase for Wolves winger Bakary Sako who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Reason For QPR vs Brentford Betting Tips

Although meetings between the two clubs have been something of a rarity over the years, the proximity between the clubs means the rivalry exists and Brentford would dearly love to complete a league double over QPR. However their current form suggests they may struggle to do that. They have lost 5 of their last 6 including a really poor home defeat to struggling Charlton in a London derby last weekend. Given Mark Warburton failed to get a new contract despite leading the club into the play-offs last season, Dean Smith must be feeling the heat with the club languishing down in 17th place currently.

QPR are making slow progress under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink but recent wins over Derby and Birmingham in their last two home games and a run of just 2 defeats in 11 matches suggest some progress is being made. They probably have one eye on next season already with their current 11th place leaving them 9 points shy of the top six with only 10 games to go. It is very hard to see them bridging that gap over the remainder of the season.

They should land the 3 points here though. A lot has changed at both clubs since Brentford beat QPR at Griffin Park back in October not least both managers while the two clubs have also lost key players. QPR have only lost 2 of their last 15 games at Loftus Road and with Brentford shipping plenty of goals right now, they should get enough chances to win this game so backing QPR Draw No Bet at 4/6 really appeals here.

Next Rangers manager LIVE as Ibrox club searches for Warburton replacement

It was announced on Friday that the former Brentford boss had departed Ibrox alongside assistant manager David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland and we'll bring you all the latest news.

    • Updated 22:33, 11 FEB 2017

The morning after the night before.

Mark Warburton's departure was confirmed by the Ibrox club on Friday night, as assistant manager David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland also left the club.

We'll be be bringing you all the latest news as the hunt begins for Warburton's replacement.

Rangers face Morton on Sunday in the Scottish Cup , with youth coach Graeme Murty taking charge of the crucial tie.

Stick with us as we bring you all the reaction to the departure of the Rangers management team.

Key Events That's all for today .

That’s all for today but don’t forget to log on tomorrow, where we’ll have all the latest on the war of words between Dave King and Mark Warburton, news on potential targets for the Ibrox club’s new management structure and the views of Sunday Mail columnists Gordon Waddell, Scott McDermott and Michael Gannon on a crazy 48 hours down Govan way.

We’ll also have LIVE coverage of the clash between Rangers and Morton at Ibrox plus the Edinburgh derby and the draw for the last-eight of the Scottish Cup!

It promises to be a cracker so see you all then!

Gough hits out at Warburton .

Former Rangers captain Richard Gough has hit out at Mark Warburton in a stinging attack on the former Gers boss.

Taking to Facebook, Gough, who spent over a decade at Ibrox, said:

Woke up this morning to the news that our football club is without a manager.

Reading between the lines he was looking for a job in the English championship. We do not want anyone at our football club who does not want to be there.

Rangers Football Club is bigger than any one person. We will appoint a manager quickly and I’m sure we will all give him and our team all our support as usual.

McInnes dodges the BIG question .

One man who has been linked with the now vacant position at Ibrox managed to avoid the press pack’s grilling this evening.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes chose NOT to do the post-match press conference following the Dons 1-0 Scottish Cup victory over Ross County and instead sent his No2, Tony Docherty, out to face the media.

Gers fans have their say on Dave King statement . Rangers chairman Dave King finally breaks silence on £30m investment

Rangers chairman Dave King has finally broken his silence and reiterated his plans for the future of the Ibrox club.

King claimed he would invest at least £30million of his own money in a bid to rebuild Rangers when he took the reins back in May 2015.

And the South African-based businessman insists £18m has already been pumped into the club since he took over, with at least an extra £12m still to be invested.

Could an interim boss be on the cards?

Dave King has made clear that Rangers are no in planning for where they go from here and reviewing the football set-up of the club.

Whether that may mean bringing in an interim manager in the short-term while they decide on which direction things are going to go down is unclear at the minute.

Graeme Murty takes charge for tomorrow’s Scottish Cup clash with Morton, but could a new short-term solution be in the pipeline while the Ibrox board get their head around what their next move will be?

King: The statement in full .

Dave King’s statement confirms what had already been said by our very own Gary Ralston last night regarding Mark Warburton’s attempts to engineer a move away from Ibrox.

The Ibrox chair insists that the club were willing to not announce the resignation until the agent acting on behalf of the management trio tried to move the goalposts, with a move to another club looking to have collapsed at the “last-minute”.

    King has his say .

The Dave King statement that we have been eagerly awaiting has dropped and in it the Gers Chief has held nothing back.

King has insisted that the club’s relationship with Mark Warburton deteriorated rapidly when the board decided to hold a review into the recruitment plan and performance over the previous two transfer windows.

The Gers supremo has also revealed how Warburton had stated to him that he saw the Ibrox job as a ‘a stepping-stone’ his ultimate aim of managing in the EPL.

Ahead of the Board meeting at the end of January, I advised the manager that the Board wished to review our recruitment plan and performance over the previous two windows.

This was a routine request and was timely given the concerns that everyone at the Club has with regard to the high level of wages we were paying relative to the performance on the pitch.

In particular, a large portion of our wage bill was not even seeing regular playing time.

    Rangers will be 'galvanised'

Morton boss Jim Duffy expects Rangers fans to rally round their side tomorrow following the dramatic developments surrounding Mark Warburton.

The Ibrox club announced last night that they had accepted the resignations of manager Warburton, assistant manager Davie Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland, although the former Brentford boss immediately denied he had quit.

Duffy takes his Championship side to Govan for the fifth-round of the Scottish Cup where the home side will have under-20s coach Graeme Murty in charge.

Nottingham Forest boss thanks club's owners

Gary Brazil has thanked Nottingham Forest’s owners for appointing him the Championship side’s boss until the end of the season.

Reds owner Fawaz Al Hasawi handed Brazil the role until May after he led Forest to three wins out of four matches as caretaker manager.

Reports this week heavily linked Mark Warburton, who dramatically departed Rangers last night, to the Forest manager’s position.

But Brazil is delighted to have been given the temporary role.

    He told the Nottingham post:

I am really happy Fawaz has allowed us to do it.

I am really excited about the opportunity to have a longer term plan now with the players.

The players have been really pleased that everything is settled.

There is stability until the end of the season and now it is our jobs to show the chairman it is the right thing that he has decided to do.

I genuinely believe it is the right thing for the club and I think it will benefit everyone in terms of what we are trying to achieve until the end of the season.

Warburton's Rangers' reign was doomed to fail - don't compare him to Le Guen

Rangers blogger Jonny McFarlane has had his say on Mark Warburton’s dramatic departure.

Jonny believes Warburton’s spell as Light Blues boss was destined to end this way because of the “level of animosity” behind the scenes at Ibrox.

King set to break his silence .

Mark Warburton wasn’t the only one coming under a bit of scrutiny from Rangers fans and the media in recent weeks, with questions being asked about Dave King and the lack of time he has been spending at Ibrox over the past few months.

Many fans were looking for the Gers chief to open up and tell them exactly what was going on at the club - especially with such little business being done during the January transfer window.

King promised transparency when he first took over at Ibrox and this has been clearly lacking in recent times.

The Gers chairman is expected to break his silence today, with a statement from the Ibrox supremo believed to be imminent.

A bit more on Rangers' interim manager Graeme Murty

Graeme Murty will take charge of Rangers’ Scottish Cup clash with Morton at Ibrox tomorrow.

The Under-20s coach will lead out the Light Blues following the dramatic departure of boss Mark Warburton.

Murty, who joined Rangers at the start of the season, was in Portugal last week with the club’s development squad.

The young Gers lost 3-1 to Porto’s Under-19s, but Murty was pleased with his players’ attitude.

Speaking to the Rangers website, Murty said:

They rose to the challenges extremely well, and once again, I think we can take Rangers footballers anywhere in the world and be proud not only with the way they play, but their conduct around the place as well, which was exceptional.

    McLeish’s Rangers’ record

Alex McLeish has emerged as a front-runner to replace Mark Warburton as Rangers manager.

Former Ibrox boss McLeish has been out of management since leaving Egyptian side Zamalek in May last year and is available immediately, although Rangers go into tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie with Morton with under-20s coach Graeme Murty in charge.

McLeish won two Scottish top-flight titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups during his five-year reign as Rangers manager between 2001 and 2006.

    Games in charge: 235

Rangers directors meet players at training ground

Rangers directors Stewart Robertson and Andrew Dickson have met the first-team squad at the club’s training ground this morning.

It is believed the Robertson and Dickson addressed the players for an hour following last night’s dramatic departure of boss Mark Warburton, No.2 Davie Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland.

Rangers go into tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie with Morton with under-20s coach Graeme Murty in charge.

Frank de Boer refuses to rule out Rangers return

Frank de Boer has refused to rule out replacing Mark Warburton as Rangers boss.

The Dutchman spent a season at Ibrox in 2004 before going into management.

After a spell in charge of Ajax and serving as assistant boss of Holland, De Boer was most recently at Inter Milan.

However, he has been out of work since he was sacked by the Italian giants last November after just 85 days in at the helm.

De Boer admits there has been no approach from Rangers as of yet, but would “listen” to any offer in the future.

Rangers to move for Southampton’s Wilson?

Rangers are reportedly looking to bring Southampton’s Ross Wilson in as Director of Football.

Wilson started off with Falkirk, but after a seven-year spell with his hometown club, he moved to Watford as Head of Football Business.

The 34-year-old then moved to Huddersfield in August 2012, where he enjoyed spells as Head of Football Operations and Director of Football.

Ronald Koeman brought Wilson in as Director of Scouting and Recruitment at Southampton in March 2015.

Watch Warburton's final pre-match press conference as Rangers boss

Despite having seemingly had his intention to resign communicated to the board earlier this week, Mark Warburton spoke at his pre-match press conference yesterday, and gave a ringing endorsement to Frank McParland following speculation the head of recruitment was poised to quit.

There was no indication at this point of the evening drama that lay ahead, and the waters were muddied further by reports that Warburton had denied standing down.

The statement from Rangers explained events during a seemingly busy week, and stressed that “absolute commitment is essential”.

Watch Warburton’s final pre-match press conference as Rangers boss in the video below.

Rangers players begin to arrive at Murray Park

The Rangers first-team have arrived at Murray Park this morning.

The players are expected to undergo a light training session ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Cup clash with Morton at Ibrox.

Graeme Murty will take charge of the Light Blues tomorrow.

De Boer waiting on 'important project'

Frank De Boer is a name which keeps cropping up amongst Rangers fans - even before Warburton’s exit was announced.

The Dutchman’s agent was quoted on Thursday saying the manager was waiting until the summer for the right job to come along.

Guido Albers said of De Boer, who was sacked by Inter Milan last November:

Frank is waiting and waiting for an important project, the right one for his ideas. So yes, I am not taking account of offers to return to work immediately. Proposals have arrived, and there have been many. Even in the immediate post-farewell at Inter, we received several calls.

But, as mentioned earlier, he believes only starting work from next season. He is open to all possibilities. Frank is a coach with great preparation and quality, he would have no problem to adapt. He might do well in La Liga, Bundesliga, Premier League, Ligue 1 and Serie A too.

The latest odds on the next Rangers boss

Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish is now the odds-on favourite to be the next permanent manager at Ibrox.

McLeish left the club in 2006 and was replaced by Paul Le Guen after winning six trophies including the Treble in the 2002/03 season.

Billy Davies was the early favourite but he has drifted to 7/2.

    David Macdonald of Ladbrokes said:

The odds are massively moving in favour of Alex McLeish returning to Ibrox, but with so many popular names being linked with the vacant managers position this betting market is one to watch.
