Despite his loss to Kei Nishikori at the Brisbane International, Bernard Tomic believes he is capable of making a surge towards the top 20 in 2015
Even Bernard Tomic found it hard to fathom. But the Australian’s abrupt Brisbane International quarterfinal exit on Friday has not stopped Tomic believing a top 20 surge is possible in 2015. In a sobering reality check ahead of the Australian Open, second seed Kei Nishikori of Japan took just 58 minutes to thump Tomic 6-0 6-4 at Pat Rafter Arena.
“You change ends and it’s already 6-love – I couldn’t believe it,” a bemused Tomic said. World No.5 Nishikori set up a semifinal with Canadian third seed Milos Raonic who earlier held out big serving Australian Sam Groth 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (7-2).
Swiss great Roger Federer on Friday night thrashed Australian wildcard James Duckworth 6-0 6-1 in 39 minutes to book a semifinal with Grigor Dimitrov. Fourth-seeded Bulgarian Dimitrov downed Slovakian Martin Klizan 6-3 6-4 on Friday.
The scoreline may have left Tomic scratching his head but he remained focused on more Sydney International success next week to help launch his top 20 tilt ahead of the Australian Open. World No.53 Tomic had built momentum returning from hip surgery that disrupted his 2014 season, claiming a second career title in Bogota.
And after his promising Brisbane surge came to an abrupt halt, Tomic, 22, hopes to take another positive step on the comeback trail in Sydney. “I always play well there,” said Tomic of Sydney where he has a 9-2 record, claiming the 2013 title and making the 2014 final.
“I don’t defend any (ranking points) for seven months (due to last year’s surgery) so I have to try to get top 20 somehow – I will fight for that.” And the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist now realises how much hard work lies ahead to achieve that goal.
Former US Open finalist Nishikori thrashed 15 winners in a whirlwind 21 minute first set. “It’s probably the best set of tennis someone has played against me in the last 12 months,” Tomic said. Meanwhile, world No.85 Groth may have been ranked 77 places lower than the big serving Raonic but the 27-year-old did not look outclassed in an encouraging sign ahead of the Australian Open.
Groth – owner of the record for the world’s fastest serve – did not concede a break point in the quarter-final shootout that featured a total of 37 aces including 22 to the Victorian. Groth said a top 50 berth was realistic if he overcame the unforced errors in the tiebreaks that cost him.
All three remaining Australians bowed out in the quarter-finals on Friday. But Groth believed the local surge would continue this summer. Australia have 13 players in the men’s top 250 with Nick Kyrgios, teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis, Tomic and now Groth ready to step up.

Wimbledon is under way and so is the accompanying marketing blitz. You may have seen some of the recent ads for Sony, Head and IBM hyping the event. You might also be wondering if you'll even remember any of those ads the next time a big tennis tournament comes around.
Based on Unruly Media's list of the most-shared tennis ads of all time, few stand a chance without Roger Federer. He appears in seven ads on the list, two of which are repeats. No one even comes close, least of all his main rival, Rafael Nadal, who had to prance around in his skivvies to make the list. Another surprise: Men dominate the list. Anna Kournikova is nowhere to be seen and only four ads feature women.
In fact, aside from Nadal and the three WTA ads, when it comes to viral tennis ads, sex doesn't sell as well as humor. Although it certainly doesn't hurt to have the handsome Federer on hand to lob the jokes.
Which were your favorites? Let us know in the comments below. The Top 20 Most-Shared Tennis Ads of All Time [VIDEO]
You're going to see a lot of Roger Federer on this list. Here's his biggest hit: A supposedly behind-the-scenes bit of horseplay in which Federer performs a William Tell-like shot with his racket. As the 6,000-plus YouTube comments show, there's a lot of debate as to whether it's actually real.
Spurring even more "was it fake?" arguments, Federer shows off his precision by lobbing balls into his manager's Mercedes.
The Flight of the Conchords's Rhys Darby tests Federer's reflexes in a nod to the love-fight relationship between Cato and Inspector Clouseau.
Word of a bird's embarrassment spreads fast in this animated ad for Vizzavi, a U.K. Internet service provider.
Andy Murray performs amazing (and possibly fake) feats on the streets of London in this ad hyping last year's Wimbledon.
The title says it all. A mysterious brunette throws Djokovic the gauntlet and he takes flight. You know it's not a U.S. ad because there's no idiotic, "Professional pilot: Do not attempt" disclaimer.
Djokovic is so unbelievably fast that he has time to woo a comely female fan (and her grandmother) with balloon animals and nipple tassels before hitting a winning shot. Good thing the instant replay was there.
Nadal struts his stuff in this bit of beefcake. Judging by the YouTube comments, the response has been pretty positive.
As Federer points out in this brand new ad, this model isn't out on the market yet, so we can only imagine what it's like to drive one.
This is another iteration of the Gillette Trick Shot ad from the top of this list.
Federer's got so many trophies that he may need a bigger plane. Sounds tough, right?
Crocodiles play with what looks like a sugar glider in this ad for an Australian telecom. PETA would not be amused.
Sam Stosur, Ana Ivanovic, Li Na, Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Kim Clijsters are featured in this tribute to the grit and glamour of professional women's tennis.
Head tennis engages in some unabashed but good-natured "Like"-mongering with its star Andy Murray.
The number three video on this list makes another appearance as a French import.
Sony U.K. will film the 2011 Wimbledon Finals in 3D. There's also a contest in which you can claim an online Sony tennis ball to win prizes.
Maria Sharapova is tired of being told how pretty she looks. Now she's ready to kick some ass.
This is sort of like Watson on Jeopardy: Andy Roddick takes on a virtual Pong paddle in this 2006 ad for American Express.
Newly minted French Open winner Li Na of China returns a ball in a sheer, butt-exposing dress in this WTA ad.
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic talks about how her determination allowed her to transcend her war-torn country's hardships.

On Sunday, Holy Angels junior Ashley Hess spent an almost-unfathomable 18 hours in pursuit of this year’s NJSIAA state singles championship.
Hess was originally scheduled to play her third-round match at Mercer County Park in West Windsor at 9 a.m. So she woke up at 6:30 and went to Fairfield Racquet Club at 7 to warm up.
Because of the rain, Hess’ match was postponed until noon. So after going home and doing some schoolwork, Hess made the hour-long trek down the N.J. Turnpike and checked in at 11:30. Unfortunately, the rain had not subsided and all the singles matches were moved inside the facility’s tennis bubble. For the rest of the day, matches were held on either two, three or four courts, depending on what was available at the time.
Since the second-seeded Hess was on the very bottom of the bracket, her match was the last of 16 to go off. After starting that match at 4:30 p.m. and winning, Hess waited around some more and finally started her fourth-round match at 9 p.m. Hess finished off that victory at 11 p.m. and arrived home at 12:30 a.m.
Always one to see the bright side of things, Hess viewed her extended day as a positive experience. She talked about seeing lots of her United States Tennis Association tournament friends, watching some good matches, going out for food with her father Rob and “knocking out some schoolwork.”
“There were some boring moments,” Hess admitted. “It wasn’t ideal, but there was nothing we could do about it. Everyone was in the same boat.”Don't miss a thing

Another North Jersey player in that boat was Northern Highlands’ Riya Ravi. The sophomore got out of bed at 6 a.m. on Sunday and got home at midnight after winning her fourth-round match against Ramsey’s Nina McAllan.
Ravi, who missed a close friend’s Sweet 16 party that evening, will meet Hess in Saturday’s state quarterfinals in a rematch of last month’s Bergen County tournament large-schools final.
On Oct. 24, Ravi trailed Hess 1-6 and 0-3 before defaulting with heat exhaustion. The Highlanders’ ace had played a long, three-set semifinal in scorching heat before her final with Hess. Two days later, Hess beat Ravi in a regular-season match, 6-3 and 7-5.
“I’m excited to play Ashley again because every time I play her, the scores get closer and closer,” Ravi said. “I think I have a chance if I play really well.”
Ravi said her keys to victory include getting her first serve in and “hitting it hard but not making too many errors.”Speaking Frankel-ly
Fair Lawn senior Nicole Frankel wasn’t sneaking up on anyone at this year’s state singles tournament. Not after last year, when she came within a whisker of upsetting Kent Place’s 17th-seeded Julia Anderson in Round 3. In that match, the unseeded Frankel lost an 11-9 super tiebreaker, played in lieu of a third set.
This year, the Cutters’ ace was seeded 21st. On Sunday, she reached the Round of 16 by beating Newark Academy’s 21st-seeded Lauren Holtzman, 7-5 and 6-2. Her own long day ended with a fourth-round loss to Vineland’s top-seeded Tess Fisher, 6-2 and 6-0.
“[Fisher] is very loud and yells a lot,” Frankel said. “Most of the games were close. I was up 40-love a bunch of times but I couldn’t close her out.”Super Soloists
North Jersey’s other top performers at the state singles affair included Ramsey’s McAllan, who lost to Ravi in their aforementioned fourth-round match (6-1, 1-6, 10-1 super tiebreaker).
IHA's Katrine Luddy and NV/Old Tappan’s Talia Shapira, both seniors, reached the third round. In their respective opening-round matches, Luddy knocked off Metuchen’s 28th-seeded Erika Rems while Shapira took out Moorestown’s 26th-seeded Emily O’Neill.
